Description:

Becoming a multicultural organization that honors the diverse staff and clients it serves involves a process of developing the cultural competence of those who work within the business or organization. As organizations grow in their cultural competency, we gain insight and understanding of diverse needs and perspectives. As a result, we are able to advocate for change and take action to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that draws people to our organizations. This is a foundational step in diversifying organizations.

We can acknowledge that there are challenges and barriers to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce. However, that doesn’t mean there are not diverse candidates available and who are highly qualified for the available opportunities. One common barrier faced is how to increase our applicant pool for people of color. In this workshop, participants will learn strategies for creating an equitable process that brings in more diverse candidates and ways to retain them once they are hired.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Learn the foundations of a culturally competent work environment.
  2. Learn strategies for different stages of the hiring process including; job descriptions, advertising, and interviewing.
  3. Better understand support systems for retaining diverse staff.
  4. How to plan for a culture of inclusion and respect.

This session is approved for the following continuing education credits:
  • 4 LFA credits
  • AIA LU credits
