We also know we need to create positive change beyond our footprint. Such positive changes – handprints are igniting passion and action because they show us how to be a force for good and to intentionally create positive ripple effects.
On social equity, many of us likewise know that we need to minimize the ways that our actions maintain or worsen inequities of power, opportunity, and privilege. But we know from research in changing environmentally-oriented behaviors that just telling people (and organizations) to be “less bad” fails to engage sustained, creative, transformative action. Could the framework of footprints and handprints provide an opportunity to re-frame some social equity challenges in ways that ignite engagement, action, and transformative changes by individuals, groups, and organizations like we are seeing for environmental handprinting?
What are “social equity footprints” and when have we caused them? What are “social equity handprints”, have we created some, and how might we create much more? What would it look like if thousands of people engaged in social equity handprinting? These questions are at the heart of our highly interactive workshop.
This workshop was offered first at the Living Product Expo, and again at Greenbuild 2018; it has been refined and improved each time. Bring your ideas, an open mind and heart, and a passion to create a socially just world!
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Understand the definition of a 'footprint' is (not just a carbon footprint, but any/all kinds of footprints on any/all kinds of negative environmental and social impacts)
- Comprehend the definition of a 'handprint', on any/all kinds of positive environmental and social impacts
- Define why a handprint, net-positive framing of a challenging problem (climate, biodiversity, social equity) engenders more open engagement, including taking responsibility for harm we all cause, intentionally or not
- Discover ways to create social equity handprints in work and life, and why this is transformative
