Sustainable Practice Leader

In 2007 Susan F. King, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C became the third woman Principal at Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED), a national firm founded in 1908.  Her award-winning work includes buildings that integrate social, economic, and environmental responsibility with aesthetically appealing design solutions for underserved populations.

King is HED's nationwide Sustainable Practice Leader, developing and implementing green design policies across the firm’s six offices. She is also a Studio Leader for Housing in the Midwest.  An unrelenting advocate for attainable housing, green market, and diversity transformation of the building industry, King is routinely invited to speak on these topics. 

King is a past Chair of the AIA Chicago Committee on the Environment and a past President of Chicago Women in Architecture.  In 2013 she was the 18th woman from Illinois to be elevated to the National AIA College of Fellows. She was also recognized by Green Building & Design (gb&d) magazine with a Women in Sustainability Leadership Award in 2016, joining an elite group of women from across the country.
